Scenario: Married couple, no kids. One works in Washington Heights, the other works in Midtown. Combined income is roughly $80,000.

Where to live which is affordable and would allow for a decent commute into the city on MetroNorth? Can you suggest any options besides MetroNorth?

Assume the couple would rent first before buying.

Thanks!

I would rent from people who have a large house and looking to rent half of it. There are lots of people like that, esp retired people on fixed income who got hit with tax increases over the past 5 years.

Check out mta.info to see where the Harlem and Hudson line trains stop - I know the Hudson line has a stop in Riverdale, just across the water from Manhattan and the 1 and 9 train are a short ride to Washington heights. I can't remember the name of the station, but it's near Broadway & 225ish St. That might help you narrow down which towns you want to look at.
