We are in process of looking for homes in The Longvale area of Bronxville and are looking for individual thoughts and/or concerns regarding the area. Schools?, floods?. Do you live in Longvale and have you experienced any major flooding?

Longvale is not in the Village of Bronxville, but is in the City of Yonkers, despite being in the P.O. for Bronxville, as the zip code is not coterminous with the Village of Bronxville borders. Bronxville's village borders do not extend west of the Bronx River Parkway, and Longwood is west of the Bronx River, hence it's in Yonkers. The neighborhood has many great points, but the schools in Yonkers are not among the best in Westchester, overall, due to the loss of a lawsuit in the 1980s that forced Yonkers to desegregate its schools through busing. Thus, school assignments do not follow neighborhood patterns, and essentially every school in the city system is a magnet school. Two of the city's schools are highly regarded, Pearls Hawthorne, and the IB-only curriculum at Yonkers High. The rest of the schools in the city tend to be average to below average by Westchester standards, and can have many challenges posed by the large population served as Yonkers is among the larger school districts in the state, which is why many people who move to Longwood or Crestwood may look to private schools.

Yonkers also imposes an income tax surcharge on your NYS income tax that must be filed and paid when you submit your tax returns for the year. It is currently 15% of 2011 NYS net tax liability, which jumped from 10% in recent years. So, if you owe $10k in state tax, you would pay Yonkers City tax surcharge of $1500.
