I've never been to the eastern parts of Long Island but from reading other posts I've come to the conclusion that E. LI and N. Westchester (around Katonah/Bedford) are pretty comparable. The homes are more spread out, there's more a small town feel. Quaint but still classy but still fairly close to New York. Is this true? Are these to areas comparable? If so, which one is better in your opinion?

For one, eastern Long Island (outside of The Hamptons), is a heck of a lot cheaper than northern Westchester.

You get more green spaces in northern westchester and over the long term, zoning standards are probably stricter as well.

E Long Island is certainly more spread out, especially the scenic north shore where many famous vinyards are located. The taxes are definately cheaper vs. northern westchester, hence you are much closer to the ocean. The hamptons even have cheap low tax pockets, such as E Quogue and great schools. I live in upper Westchester and whould kill to find a house on Long Island and pay half the tax - Westchester is just getting ridiculas now! The minus to living on E Long Island is the long trip into NYC.

E. Long Island is certainly prettier because of the ocean views, etc. but one thing I like about N. Westchester is you are "free" to travel in any direction relatively easily. To leave eastern LI you have to head west quite aways and through NYC before you can go anywhere..... (unless you spend time and money on one of the ferries).

I actually went to school at Stony Brook and live in Northern Westchester, and for me while the neighborhoods feel the same, the big difference is geography. When you are on Eastern Long Island, with the exception of the Port Jeff ferry, you are isolated and stuck on the Island. If you go more east, it gets even more isolated. Your only way to get to the rest of the country really is to go west. And the traffic to get off of the Island is miserable.

In Northern Westchester, if I go more north, there more cities and places. For me, Danbury is 30 mins away, Poughkeepsie is about 45mins, and you can keep going to Hartford/Boston or Albany and farther.

One major plus for Eastern Long Island however is the weather- it will snow MUCH less on LI than it will in Northern Westchester due to being surrounded by water, being farther south, and being much closer to sea-level.
