Boots for Winter Weather... (Maine, Rockland: fit in, college, shop)

I may be moving to either Northern Westchester, Rockland or Long Island soon. I wanted to know how many pairs of boots specifically for winter weather conditions are ideal. I'll be moving from Miami, FL so I have no clue when it comes to proper clothing for very cold climates. Thanks in advance for your responses and advice...,

How many boots depends on what you intend to do and where you intend to do it. Merely surviving the journey from front door to car to parking garage at work? Snowmobiling in new England? For LI you may not need anything at all that you wouldn't wear in FL. BTW, the NY metro area in no way qualifies as a "very cold" climate. NH, MN or Maine are very cold. You get the idea.

Are you a man or woman...and are you trying to be hip, or functional?

If you are a woman and trying to fit in and it's just really cold but dry, Uggs or calf-length boots are pretty popular. When it's raining, Hunter boots are the usual footwear. Snow boots aren't really required unless you are planning on doing something in the snow, like plowing it or skiing. If you are, there are some basic half-lace ones that will do the trick.

But like the other poster said, this isn't really cold, and I moved from CA. Last winter was brutal, but so far this year I've been very happy (knocking on wood as I say that!)
