If people commute every day into Manhattan from say one of the River towns like Hastings or Dobbs Ferry...how much are they paying per round trip ? I was on metro north's website and got sticker shock.

You just get a monthly pass, although it is about $230 a month, plus subway if you need to conect (plus parking at the station if you need that from $500/year to $1200 to $5/day....grr, maddening!)

Metro North isn't cheap. It's the price you pay for civility. My husband refers to it as 'the gentleman's train.'

Its true - you do pay, but what you get is a seat and generally quiet cars where everyone is in the business of reading, doing work or being online. Its not a bad way to commute at all.

SO the $230 is a pass for only one person...correct? What if you only go into the city a couple times a week? And is it true that children under age 11 are free?

Yes, $230 is one person. I don't know about kids up to 11. I think my 5 yo went free once, though.

If you only go a few times per week you are stuck with the daily rate, I believe. Perhaps you can buy 10 rides or so in advance like on the subway?

Always buy web tickets for the best price on Metro-North. And, you can buy a 10 trip ticket as well for additional savings. Buying on the train is the most expensive ticket option, followed by ticket machine, and then web ticket.

Sometimes you get a seat...and sometimes the germ infested bathroom works on Metro-north! I've been on many cummuter trains throughout the USA and abroad, and the ones surrounding NYC have got to be the filthiest!!!! This is purely not worth the monthly ticket and/or parking fees. Did I mention subways yet?
