"people with kids are tearing each other's eyes out at open houses"

With that level of violence you were probably just at the local school board meeting, not an open house (signed former long-time Brooklyn resident and parent).

One thing I have never heard suggested on this post is for people to buy a house in Fleetwood (right outside Bronxville) and send your kids to Bronxville schools. If you don't live in B'ville the tuition is (was) 13k per year. Other private schools in WC go as high as 35k per year, so Bronxville doesn't sound so bad. Bronxville schools are right down the road from the northernmost houses in Fleetwood, but once you cross the Bronxville line, the housing prices double or triple. This might work for some people looking for a more affordable house in Westchester.

I actually know quite a few people who do exactly that. I also know a few others who have their kids in the local elementary school in that area (Pennington) until the end of 6th grade, then for 7th grade either do what you suggest or (usually if they're Catholic though you technically don't have to be) put them in a parochial school like Ursuline, etc. since they're usually a lot cheaper than private school (and sometimes less than paying the $13K Bronxville tuition).
