I'm happy to see some new responses! I've still been debating this issue. The contractor I've been using for some work told me about a ConEd program that I can switch to gas with no upfront expenses - it would get financed onto my monthly ConEd bill, and they will only do it if your bill + financing is 80% or less of what I was paying for oil, so I wouldn't get in over my head with debt trying to convert. I just need to stop dragging my feet and get them out to my house to do a full estimate, etc. The only downside is the contractor would require any energy problems (drafts, caulking, etc) to be addressed before converting, and this is an old house, I have no idea what an energy audit would find. Fixing those issues alone could potentially cost big bucks up front.
My first winter oil bill this year was $547 - OUCH! And still not that cold outside!
Still not that cold compared to what? It doesn't get that much colder here on average. High 20s to low 30s in the day, low 20s at night. For southern Westchester at least...
Bite your tongue...I'm from CA and am trying to convince myself last year was normal.
When I look at Dec. temps, I do see that it has been relatively warm earlier in the month but this week is pretty much as bad as it gets on average. But who knows...2 years ago was abysmal. I didn't see grass from 12/26 until sometime in March!
Are most of you in Westchester county? I'm curious what costs are like in Putnam. I live in the Bronx and am paying Con Ed an average of $248/month. Summer months can be as high as $350 (running AC all day). In the winter we pinch alot so we sleep with layers (heat miser). Although I am living in a 6-year old 3 family home and our apartment is 720 sq ft. What can I expect from an 1800 sq ft home on Gas/Elec in Putnam?
