New Rochelle is the closet thing to WP , then there Port Chester.... The Train station in WP is located Downtown...
??? In what way is NR even remotely similar to WP? There's no nightlife, no shopping, no scene at all. Yeah, both have centrally located train stations.

Well, OK, though not very informative since it ignores who's living in the high rises, the kind of stores (and shoppers) and the demographics in those neighborhoods.
I lived in new rochelle for a few months and wasn't thrilled with it. There seemed to be no night life (which is a shame because I heard years ago that's what it was known for) and the areas near the downtown seemed to be a bit run down (aside from down towards the water).

Quite so. And one of those high rises is now being used as a dorm for Iona College (or is it Monroe?). Not surprisingly they're having tough time finding the upscale residents they envisioned.
I believe upper westchester is a good idea. someone mentioned mt kisco which has restaurants and some nitelife plus walkability and metro north, although on a smaller scale than white plains. there are starter homes in your price range if you go a little outside of mt kisco to somers or goldens bridge, sometimes even the outskirts of katonah , my town.
Ossining and Mt. Kisco? Sure, if you don't mind an hour and a half commute each way (door to door).
We're in Larchmont and it's already an hour.
The morning express trains from Ossining are 44-49 minutes, as opposed to 31-36 for Larchmont. That's an extra 13 minutes, not 30.
As for door-to-door, it all depends on where your two doors are and how you get to them from the train.
