My husband and I are possibly considering buying a co-op in Portchester on Westchester Ave.

We currently live in an apartment in Rye (the Highlands property) and love the location next to the train station. The little town is nice, albeit very small. We pay $1580 a month for a one bedroom.

The co-ops we've seen in Portchester are 2 bedrooms, 1200 sq ft for 210,000. We think that our mortgage + maintenance would be no more than $1600 a month, but we're not sure if it's worth buying.

We're planning on leaving the state within 2-3 years, so we're not sure if it's worth it. But we'd love more space, especially if it means not really going over our budget.

I'm trying to get some perspective on the pros vs. cons of buying vs. renting, plus what it would be like to live in Port Chester as a twentysomething newly married couple vs. living in Rye.

Thoughts?

Dont' buy if you plan to sell your home in less than 10 years. Selling a home is not cheap. We are back to the traditional way of homeownership. People are buying homes to plant roots and raise a family.
