Hi all,

Me and my wife are looking to rent out a place around Manhattan area as we both work there. We came across quite a few options in Yonker's but are not familiar with the neighborhood. My main concern is safety.

Please share your views about Yonkers.

Thanks,
D

My first view is to never spell yonkers with an apostraphe ever again. (yonker's)

Yonkers varies between the slums of the southwest section and the lushness of the northeast section that borders Scarsdale and Crestwood/Tuckahoe/Eastchester/Bronxville. I don't know the dangerous parts that well but i am more familiar with the safer areas. I think it's safe to say that anything east of the Saw Mill River parkway is pretty safe, tho in the area that borders Hastings you're pretty safe west of the Saw Mill and north of Tuckahoe rd. The downtown waterfront has been revitalized for a few blocks, that may be of some interest but I only know Yonkers in a general sense

I live in the Kimball section (northeast Yonkers - near both Mt. Vernon West & Fleetwood Metro North, and the 2 & 4 train) and it is a very quiet area. Yonkers is big & it depends which area you are looking in. I also lived in the Bronx River section which was fine except I lived next to a bar so it was noisy at night. If you have questions about a particular area feel free to msg me.

If you click over to page 2 of the Westchester County forum, there is another thread about Yonkers. I posted my thoughts about the city there.

Though the housing is probably least expensive in the SW part of Yonkers, if you're concerned about safety I would tend to stay away from that part of the city as it seems to have the most problems with crime from what I see on the local cable TV channel (News 12 Westchester).

FYI: There is no apostrophe in the word Yonkers, just as there is no apostrophe in the words "videos" or "tires", for example. I'm sorry, but I guess this is a pet peeve of mine. It bothers me when I see adults who cannot write the English language correctly. (No, I am not an English teacher.)
