I recently moved to Westchester and i'm done driving all the way to Jones Beach to get murdered on those dangerous waves...
What is the scene like at Glen Island Park?
What kind of people go there - a la Jones Beach or Orchard Beach in the Bronx?
How crowded is it?
What is the sand quality?
What is the water/wave quality?
I recently moved to Westchester and i'm done driving all the way to Jones Beach to get murdered on those dangerous waves... Dangerous waves??? You gotta be kidding.Waves are the whole point - along with clean water and nice sand.
What is the scene like at Glen Island Park? Somewhat seedy.
What kind of people go there - a la Jones Beach or Orchard Beach in the Bronx? Slightly more upscale version of Orchard Beach. Just slightly.
How crowded is it? Crowded.
What is the sand quality? Terrible. Go to Jones (or Rbt Moses).
What is the water/wave quality? It's the LI Sound. Mediocre at best. Much dirtier than the ocean.
If it's no waves you want then I guess you'd rate wave quality as good.
Glen Island is a small beach-not too exciting but a good place to go for a quick drive to the beach. The park itself is nice and well-kept, although I haven't done more than drive through the parking lot to see the 'castle' (a stone replica of a castle)
There are picnic tables all around for family gatherings, outside the beach area. I remember it being pretty nice and well-kept.
As a teenager, I went there all the time, as did my friends. It was a safe, local place to go. It's not anywhere near as nice as Jones, but it will suffice for an 'easy beach day.'
I took my triplets there when they were about 10,(5 years ago) and they loved it, but all that kids need is some sand and a hot dog stand and they're happy.
You do realize that the only reason that Jones Beach is so crowded is because Westchester 'beaches' are so bad, right?
As a former Californian, I take a huge issue with anyone calling ANYTHING on the Sound a beach. It's a disgusting mud puddle filled with animal waste and who knows what else.
Also, most communities on the Sound have private clubs so what is left behind at the public 'beaches' does tend to be a little seedier than the general community...at least for Larchmont and Mamaroneck. The whole area down there is getting pretty sketchy.
No, definitely not a beach-beach (I was queen of the Hamptons a hundred years ago-I know a nice beach) but good to entertain kids. Just swim around the chicken bones and peach pits. Glen Island is a state park-NY is pretty good about keeping them up. But, I haven't been there in awhile.
It is in a really nice neighborhood in Pelham-pretty old houses.
Pelham or New Rochelle? I had no idea that any part of Pelham touched water.
Either way, it is getting worse. Just Sunday they had 2-3 guys arrested for trying to incite a riot there because cops told them to turn down their music. I wouldn't have wanted my kids there.
I guess it has changed-gotten a little rougher. It was a long time ago when we used to go there. It also might be New Rochelle-I drive through Pelham Manor to get there, so it seems like Pelham. I not sure where the city line is. I'll have to Mapquest it.Cheers.

Pelham has a small row of waterfront houses - more like estates, really - directly on the sound. NYAC straddles New Rochelle and Pelham. There's also a miniscule park on former landfill next to NYAC.
Yes, I used to go trap shooting at the AC as a teenager-it was directly across from Glen Island and the clay pigeons were shot over the water. I believe the AC was New Rochelle, but I'm not sure what town the shooting range was in. That was so much fun, but I have no idea if they still have a trap range there. It was noisy, that's for sure. It was a nice little area a buzzillion years ago.
If you really want a Sound beach and it's lack of waves, you drive a bit out to other possibly better options than Glen Island:
1) Rye Playland, similar crowd to Glen Island, just more crowded (but bigger beach)
2) Oakland Beach, the much nicer 'next door neighbor' to Rye Playland. Pretty expensive, especially if you don't live in Rye, though Thursdays after 6pm anyone can go in for just a $2 parking fee and no beach fee.
3) Sherwood Island in CT (Westport, exit 18 off I-95).....similar to Rye Playland, though surroundings are prettier.
