It's not going to Harvard that kills some kids...it's getting into it and what you have to do to make the cut. Not all students are cut out to do that, regardless of their parents' aspirations for them.

It's a waste of time and energy. If the child is really brilliant, he or she is better off going to CalTech, MIT, Juilliard (scholarship), Heidelberg, Sorbonne, Louvain.

It's spelled Caltech. With a lower case 't'.

Coming to Westchester from Los Angeles (Pasadena, more specifically) I do feel a bit cheated. I expected the schools to be great and I don't fell like they are...at least, not until high school. I'm not saying the schools here aren't better than in Pasadena, they are, but primarily because the community is much wealthier and there are many, many fewer english language learners. My taxes are 3-4x what they are in CA and I don't feel that the schools are 3-4x better and the community infrastructure and offerings (roads, libraries, parks, etc) pale in comparison to what LA had to offer.

However, we purposely chose not to live in NYC when moving here because the schools are much better then NYC schools. Put in that light, I might consider Westchester a bargain when compared to NYC.

With Khan Academy (www.khanacademy.org), I wonder if it's possible for kids to just self-learn things at a much faster pace than what is taught at school. School districts would then become irrelevant.

To my knowledge, MOOCs (multiple online open classrooms) like Kahn are only stand-alone in higher education. In high school and elementary school levels, they are only used as part of "flip classrooms" in which the receptive instruction is done at home independently and classroom time is used for hands-on experimentation and application. This is a growing trend, but it very much requires teachers to lead differentiated group activities--and it takes a skillful teacher to make it work.
