We are currently in the process of trying to decide whether we should raise our roof - whole house renovation - & stay in our current home (north end of New Rochelle - Davis Elementary, 2 children attending lower grade levels), or move to a more reputable school district nearby.
The towns we are looking at are: Pelham, Larchmont/Mamk, Harrison, & Rye.
We like our location, & could essentially get a 'new home' where we are for significantly less than what it would cost to buy a home in those other towns. However, we would likely send our kids to Iona Prep & Ursiline for HS rather than send to NewRo HS, so we would have to factor roughly an additional 150k for private schools. Still, moving to one of those other towns we would definitely get less property, & not that nice of a home comparitively, with potentially higher taxes...
So my question is what do people think is a better: Davis, Albert Leonard, then Private school vs public school throughout in one of those other towns given the variables stated above?
We are concerned about our kids reaching their potential both academically & athletically - - worried that staying in such a large district as New Rochelle - even until middle school - our kids might just coast by & get overlooked...also, though to a less extent, safety concerns in New Rochelle as our kids get older.
I live nearby in Larchmont (born and raise, MHS grad), and i am a broker...and have many friends in Ward/Davis. I've heard many of the same concerns. I also have friends who swear by they schools. I have 2 little ones, pre school and Murray 1st grade. Personally speaking, and talking with friends with kids in New Ro, same grade, I do sense that New Ro school classmates does feel a little more spread versus Larchmont, kids coming from a bigger area, a little less intimate. But it's all about you and your kids and what you want/need. I would encourage you to take a your of a school in tube surrounding area and talk to parents. Happy to help...can talk off line too.
