I'm contemplating a possible move to NY, working right down near Battery Park. Budget about $1M, great public schools Elementary thru HS are essential and we don't mind a little diversity. Our current school is 50% white, 35% economically disadvantaged and is fantastic.
In NJ I'm thinking Summit, maybe Maplewood.
In Westchester I'm thinking Mamaroneck, Eastchester, Larchmont and maybe Scarsdale.
Any difference in commute I need to know about? Looks like a wash on paper, but one goes to Grand Central and the other to Penn Station. Does it matter?
Any other suggested towns welcome. I'm hoping to keep door to door commute as close to an hour as possible.
My husband used to commute from Scarsdale (Hartsdale train station) to Wall St and it always took over an hour, sometimes an hour and a half if the subway was screwed up (which it is regularly). And that was taking an express train that only took 30-38 minutes with a 5 minute walk to the station.
The train from Mamaroneck takes longer compared to the Hartsdale-Scarsdale-GCT trains that run during rush hour. The stops in Eastchester (Crestwood and technically Tuckahoe, but not sure about the parking permit situation for those stations) would always be on local trains.
Ok, so after doing a lot of research (thx city-data!) we're leaning towards Larchmont/Mamaroneck. From what I gather the train would be about 35mins, the subway from GC to Bowling Green looks like 15 mins, assume a 5 min transfer, does 55mins seem like a reasonable guess from Larchmont stn to Bowling Green stn?
Seems on par with the NJ option, Summit, but NJ doesn't have sailing at your doorstep.
I think thats optimistic.
I love this area, living in the Rye Neck part of Mamaroneck, but I think a commute to Wall St. is going to end up being a bit wearing after a few months. Then again, thats just me, you might have more stamina.
Your other choice, Summit, is a good choice too. Lots of great houses with good lots, and wonderful mature trees and definitely a nice little downtown area with some worthwhile places to go. How long is the commute from there (I've only driven out there to vist friends).
Not in a million years...my husband has to get downtown and it is always an hour and a half. The subway always has issues. NJ by a mile.
When he worked right out of GCT, it was an hour door to door allowing for walking/driving to the station, a few minutes leeway there, the trip, getting out of the station, etc. 55 minutes to Wall Street? Maybe if you are driving from Hastings on a Sunday morning.

Ok, that makes sense in retrospect. More thought required...
There are great towns on the NJ Transit lines - Summit, Chatham, Glen Rock, Ridgewood, Ho Ho Kus. Bergen County generally has higher taxes than Morris County, but both have solid schools and better commute to downtown than Westchester.
I would agree it isn't a pretty commute. My BIL does the commute to Wall Street from Scarsdale, which has a fair number of express trains to GCT and I think it still sucks. The subway is the real nightmare. He recently started driving in over train, not because it was faster but at least he could get work done during that time (phone calls).
Chatham, Summit, Glen Rock look near in the map but my colleagues who live in that area (including Madison) say it takes them up to an hour door to door to our office in downtown.
The ones who live in South Orange, Cranford and Maplewood claim to have a much faster commute.
