I agree with the pressure cooker comment. But hey, some people might like for their kids to be in that type of environment. There's lots of peer pressure to study hard and suceed.
Just remember that some kids do fall thru the cracks and not every kid should or can go to the Ivies (much to the chagrin of the parents of Scarsdale).

One way to get ahead of the realtor snakes is to have a clear understanding of New York municipalities, a map, and a recognition that US Postal addresses have no bearing on municipalities - they are simply delivery routes designed to most efficiently deliver mail. A good map with school district, municipal and zip code boundaries should clear things up. Always ask these four questions:
1. What Village is the property in?
answer can be 'none,' as Villages are formed out of, or carved from Towns. Some properties are in Towns, parts of which (or all of which) have not yet or won't be a part of a Village.
2. What Town is the property in?
every square foot of the state of new york is within a town, except for CITIES.
3. What school district is the property in?
4. What does the US Postal service call the property's address?
All of these answers can be different. For BUILDING things, the VILLAGE or TOWN is the operative government
FOR educating kids, the SCHOOL DISTRICT is the operative government
for mailings, the US Postal service address means...the postal route's name, nothing else.
A confusing element are "Village/Towns," and Town/Villages," which are co-terminus governments formed one before the other, one swallowing the other, in order, usually, to either prevent some development outcome or to stave off loss of an area slated for development. Scarsdale, Mount Kisco, Mamaroneck, and Rye are all variations on this hopeless local government solution.
CITIES are municipalities that have their own school systems.
GET A MAP! KNOW YOUR ELECTED'S! good luck, and don't believe a realtor.
I have read that Yonkers has a very good high school IB program, and high SAT scores. It's considered a dumpier town, but I think it's coming back. Just thought I'd throw that in.
