Our lasting monument from hurricane Sandy, Irene and the freak October snowstorm was a massive woodpile. We lost about 6 large oaks (+24") and a 30" black birch (huge for a birch!). The trunks had all been cut up and arranged into a massive woodpile half the size of a schoolbus. Yesterday's task was to start moving the pile to the woods where it's out of view. If I weren't insane I'd have paid somebody to do it. But then I'd have been deprived of seeing:
  • the dozens of wood frogs hopping out of the way
  • an errant leopard frog
  • countless toads of all sizes
  • several grey tree frogs
  • a wonderful spotted salamander
  • a couple garter snakes
  • a big black rat snake
All day long there were endless visitations by tiger swallowtails and some occassional black swallowtails too. They swarm over the masses of blooming ligularia along with the bees. As a final treat there were several indian pipe colonies popping up in the shade of the woods.

So, all in all, it wasn't such a chore after all.
