Okay so here's the deal I live in Indiana right now, it's a pretty run down state and I'd like to move to a more lively state/area. The thing is, I'm 21, a child on the way and I want the best for my child and my wife. I was wondering if White Plains would be a good choice or if there's another choice somewhere in New York because I think it's a lovely state. I'd like a low crime rate which I'm not sure if it's possible in New York. I'm not trying to put down NY, I just want to know if White Plains, or another city is ideal. I'm a barber and my wife is a cosmetologist, so is there any shops nearby to work at? I've done research and overall it seems like a nice place, but I've heard there's a lot of gang activity. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

I'd keep doing some research. While White Plains does have low crime and a TON of hair salons, it is very expensive. The job market is also not very good right now. As a matter of fact, a few years ago Forbes ranked the most expensive cities in the US and White Plains came in 3rd!!!! This was based on rental rates, groceries, electric, gas prices, etc. FYI, all parking is metered and an overtime ticket is $20!!!!! I think you'll be in major sticker shock coming from Indiana. Just my 2 cents. Good luck to you!

White plains is very safe. There is a small section that is not great, but easily avoidable and even there not much happens. The only "dangerous" places in westchester are Mount Vernon, portions of New Rochelle and portions of Yonkers. You will know these areas when you see them. Again, this is relative -- we are not talking about Detroit type of danger, just places where the risk of something happening are a bit greater when it gets dark. Usually, however, its the locals victimizing each other in these areas.

How did you randomly pick White Plains on a map vs. the tens of thousands of other towns?
Do you have any roots in this area? Why not just move to Cincinnati or Tulsa?
