Mount Vernon sucks. I do live here but thankfully will be moving soon. Mount Vernon is crime ridden, and for all of you who think that living on the North side keeps you safe from all the problems of the South side get over it. Crime is moving north, don't believe me? Go on a ride-along with the MVPD.
Well i've grown up in Mt. Vernon for 25 years.. an no not on the south side.... Mt. Vernon, with in it's small 4sq miles is truthfully two different places, and since you'll be at the hospital, you're at the crossroads.... i lived in the Park lane co-ops all my life on Lincoln ave in what's considered the North Side... that's where you should be... gramatan ave, the Fleetwood section, North Columbus ave, hutchinson Blvd, California Road, they are all good places to situate yourself and be 5 minutes from work. Shopping is limited but, the Cross county mall not to far by bus or car in nearby Yonkers, provides movies, clothing, a great grocery store and the such... my vote is, find a great rental around these areas and enjoy workin at the hospital... trust me you will have plenty to do!
Steer clear of Yonkers and Mount Vernon for housing. Local driving is tedious since parkways and highways will not take you close to the hospital - so expect to travel 25 mph and figure out how long you want to take to get there. There are some apartment towers in Bronxville, New Rochelle (North Ave. and Glen Island area), and Eastchester (Garth Road) that are closer to parkways and 15 - 20 min. to Mount Vernon Hospital. I also suggest you contact Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle (of which MVH is a member) and ask about what their residents are doing for housing. When you want to shop, White Plains has 2 malls - not necessary to live there since you can get there easily. There is fast food all over Westchester: Mexican, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, Thai, etc. You won't go hungry here.
I have been in Mt. Vernon for a long time, I work for the City of Mt. Vernon at the Police Dept. I would not have my daughter live here on her own. I suggest New Rochelle, it is only 10 minutes local drive or ride to Mt. Vernon. The Avalon on the Sound has two wonderful towers of beautiful, safe apartments available for short or longer term rentals. There is a great shopping, movies, resturants area right within walking distance from both Avalon Towers. Please do not move to Mt. Vernon, it is not a safe place for a young woman on her own and I find the summers to be especially dangerous. God bless and direct you, always seek His counsel.
Try the Woodlawn section of the Bx. Its close to the Metro North train which will take you into Westchester Co. or New York city. Mt. Vernon is dangerous.
