News sites are saying that a southbound auto went through a gap in the divider before reaching McLean Avenue and struck a northbound car. Both drivers died. My question: How large a gap in the divider is this? Was it built to allow emergency vehicles to get from one side to the other? From satellite view, the gap appears to be about 500 feet before southbound traffic reaches Exit 3.
Thanks.

I know the gap, it is there for emergency vehicles only, I would say the gap is no longer than 20 feet. The speed limit is 50 MPH, for some reason I would say he was going a little faster than that.

Its a standard gap, probably 2 car lengths. They are all over major highways. yes they allow emergency vehicles to access and turn. They allow authorities to turn traffic if there is an accident or investigation. Nothing unusual about this particular gap in the divider. Its tragic, but hardly the first time cars have gone the wrong way on a highway. Wishing peace to those who lost loved ones, but otherwise, not much to do here.
