I am a single professional 40 year old female with my job likely relocating to NYC. I live in Nyack now and the commute to the city is not really desirable. I also may have to still work out of our Westchester office from time to time...I need to visit both towns for sure.
I am looking for perspectives on which town has more activity/community/restaurants and professionals living in them, etc. Yes - I know both of these towns are not the city and have a lot of families in them. I do not want to live in NYC however...
Thanks!

If no kids, then Mamaroneck is better and more convenient. Why not White Plains instead? WP would have more retail and other amenities.

Honestly, I think you would be happy in either one. They are so close together that you'll find yourself taking advantages of options in both towns.

I am not a big fan of White Plains...it just doesn't feel homey to me...
Why is Mamaroneck better without kids?

Mamaroneck - more available rentals (including an Avalon), more retail/restaurants in the main street. However it comes with more density and vehicular traffic as well so families with kids would probably prefer Larchmont if they could afford it.

Either one. They share the same school district, so there is a link between the two communities.
Mamaroneck Avenue in Mamaroneck and nearby streets are absolutely loaded with restaurants. When the weather is nice there are sidewalk tables everywhere. In Larchmont, the restaurants are more spread out.
Larchmont is wealthier than Mamaroneck, but Mamaroneck has a section that is just as wealthy as anything in Larchmont.
Kids have nothing to do with your decision. Find the apartment of your dreams in a specific location that you like at the right price, in either community, and go for it.

Families with kids typically choose the location of their homes based primarily on what is good for their kids be it schools, safety, space etc. If the person has kids then those kids will have something to do with the decision.

She appears to be a single woman. She doesn't want Manhattan, and knows that suburbia is full of families. What difference does it make if there are more kids in one community than the other?
And one would think that condos (and coops) in both communities have lots of singles.

Yes presumably she is single but she also asked the question why one would be better without kids, hence her question deserves an answer.
And since M'neck appears to have more stock of apartments than Larchmont then there is a greater chance that she can find a cheaper apartment of sufficient quality there.

It's the same town, so you have the same amenities, though not the village services of Larchmont if in the Town of Mamaroneck. So, I would look at available units and then make a decision as to which home you prefer.
If you want a quaint walkable village at your doorstep, then that would tilt in the favor of Larchmont, which, like Katonah, eschews chains, so you would have a mix of local restaurants, shops, and a movie theater (owned by a chain, but a playhouse, not a multiplex). However, all of that is only a few minutes away if you live in Mamaroneck, so you cannot go wrong with either area.
