I'm trying to find a new place to live and one of my friends recommended Shrub Oak which is right next to Yorktown. What stores are in Shrub Oak? How good are the schools? Is it a safe place to live?

Shrub Oak is in Yorktown. It's one of the many hamlets that make up the town. It is in the Lakeland school district. It has a very nice Main Street with a library, good Indian restaurant, and an Abotts custard place. It has a great town pool complex. There are some stores in town but there is big box shopping very nearby at the Jefferson Valley mall in Jefferson Valley, on route 6 in Mohegan Lake, and at the Cortlandt Town Center in Cortlandt. It's pretty blue collar and tends to lean conservative politically. It's certainly safe.

Aren't they all very comparable in quality?

Yorktown is better than Lakeland and Mahopac.
Lakeland serves the poorer section of Yorktown, Jefferson Valley, and Peekskill.

The question is Lakeland vs Mahopac, which has a more educated population?

Lakeland has a very good district, hence there is more money in favored Yorktown. Cooper Beach middle school in Lakeland is also favored, where the district also feeds southern regions into Croton area - south of 202, Walter Panas High School, which is also rated very high. Cortlandt Manor borders Yorktown which is also a booming hamlet offering more mainstream amenities, and is Lakeland District based. Peekskill caters more to affordable housing and lower classes, although, offers a few good restaurants and a very artistic community.

Mahopac also provides a lot of shopping amenities and schools are relatively in good standing. It's a mixed class, but certainly not a middle - upper class lifestyle. Yorktown however is the closest to real money in the area, but a far cry from Scarsdale, albeit - "old money" and very ritzy!

Lakeland does not serve Peekskill. Peekskill is it's own district. Lakeland covers northern Yorktown, including Shrib Oak and Jefferson Valley, northern Cortlandt, including Mohegan Lake, and south-central Putnam county.
