Everyone always has given the reason that people are going to their weekend homes. What weekend home? I have never heard of a single person with a weekend home in Rockland, NJ, Orange County, PA, etc. Where are all these people going on Fridays????
If I've never heard of either, there is no way they are causing a massive traffic jam across half the county.
It's like the Olympics is in town every Friday.
Where are all these cars going that they don't go on Mon-Thurs ???
Gotta remember that people are not just leaving Westchester - its a feed in from 95 for people leaving Long Island, NYC, CT etc...going anywhere they need to go in the country - which requires crossing the Hudson. Do you want to deal with the cross bx or the Tapp if you are traveling?? Lesser of two evils I suppose.
Sullivan County, Columbia County, Greene County, Ulster County.
Where in each of these 4 counties are people possibly going? I don't know of a sole person in CT or LI or NYC or Westchester who owns property or sets foot in those 4 areas.

Yea, but where are they going every Friday?
Are they driving to Chicago?
I don't know anyone who leaves every weekend.

Well, I do. An NYC friend has a weekend house out near Wurtsboro. Not to mention, plenty of people would use the TZB for access to the Catskills via rt 17 or even 87.
Catskills aside, are you really saying nobody from NYC area would ever go to New Paltz?
I've always figured that Friday evening traffic is the result of everyone leaving at around 5:30 to get a start on their weekend, whereas evening traffic is more spread out Monday-Thursday with a larger number of people working late and keeping different hours.
