I am traveling up to NYC at the end of the month for an event and while I am there, I would like to do a BBQ/picnic for my daughters' 16th b-day at a park. Can someone please recommend a nice, clean, safe park that provides grills and picnic tables. I am looking for something within maybe 45 minutes or less from the Bronx. No further than FDR Park (I am not interested in FDR Park as I've heard it's changed for the worse). I would rather not have to pay to reserve an area, but I am willing to do that if I find a really nice park. Thanks.
I take my dog to FDR park constantly and have been coming to this park for over a decade or so. I have to disagree with what you heard. The picnic areas are always well-maintained and the town does all sorts of events here throughout the year because it is so lovely. I'd rethink this if you don't get any better suggestions. Best of luck.

Thanks! I had been going to FDR for many years - we've always had all our family functions there and that's the only nice park I've ever visited, but I left NYC 6 years ago and I was told by a friend that FDR is not the same anymore. But I might take your advice if you say it's still a good place to go to because I've always loved going there.
