Taxes are higher in Yorktown but you get a lot more land and the houses are more affordable. As far as the small town atmosphere, I'm not sure if Yorktown has it. Couldn't tell just by driving thru. I did see a shopping center, CVS, A&P, etc. I guess the next closest shopping area would be Jefferson Valley Mall?
I believe Rt 6 and Rte 202 which are closer than the JV mall have tons of stores. Mostly chain stores (AC Moore, Old Navy, Walmart, Kohls, Home Depot, Shoprite etc), not really cute boutique type stores that you find in towns like Bronxville and Larchmont. But definitely lots of shopping options, similar to what you would find in Yonkers or White Plains.
For cute boutique type shops and antiques, you can go to Cold Spring which is about 10-15 min away or Croton which is about 5 min away.
Does anyone know if the residents from the Yorktown community are concerned with living to close to Indian Point power plant? Does anyone know exactly how far it is from Yorktown Heights?
According to city data, Yorktown Heights is 12 miles to Indian Point. Most of Westchester is within 20 miles and of Indian Point so technically, if anything happens, we would all be up a creek.
I have a friend who lives in Cortlandt Manor and she doesn't even think about it. Can't speak for all people living ion the area but I imagine that if they live there, it must not bother them too much.
