My wife and I are about to start shopping for a house in the lower westchester area and I've heard some nice things about the fleetwood neighborhood. I have a couple questions about it.
What is the geographical boundary that defines fleetwood?
Is it generally walkable? Assuming the distance isn't terrible we'd like to be able to walk to the train, coffee shops or bars.
Are there any other neighborhoods along the same lines to consider?
Fleetwood is eminently walkable and has a nice business district with bars, shops, grocery, etc..
Boundaries are Bronxville to the north, Linclon Ave. to the south, Yonkers (and the Metro North train station) to the west and Chester Heights (NE Mount Vernon) to the east.
The Yonkers side is also quite decent and served by the same Metro North station. Less walkable (though still doable) to Gramatan Ave., though there is a little strip mall there with Pizzeria, CVS, Chinese food, etc.
Another option in the same area is Bronxville PO area of Yonkers which is closer to Bronxville's business district. Bronxville's business district and Fleetwoods are really only 15 minutes walk apart. And it is a really pleasant walk/neighborhood on both sides of the B'vill/Fleetwood divide. Leafy and nice with beautiful houses and gardens.
I currently live in Fleetwood and it the a diamond in the rough.
Considering what the poster above has so eloquently pointed out, the taxes are much lower so you're gonna get a lot more bang for your buck.
My wife & I walk from home to Bronxville to Eastchester, Pelham, and back home and it's always a pleasant walk.
