Thanks for any insight that you can provide. Thanks!

Of course everyone is different in terms of taste, but there is no need for a water softener. We do have a water filter on our faucet. We prefer the taste after a brief commercial kitchen grade filter cleans it. But there is nothing dangerous about it. I am in cortlandt, and we do not have fluoride in our water. NYC and further south county, some towns do. That is something that some support and some oppose, so just be aware of it.
If its well water, you will need a filter, but not a softener. Most of the wells have a low metal count and soft water, but the Hudson aquifer has a strong taste to it that a charcoal commercial grade filter will cut down on. Of course every well is differnet, so test it and act accordingly.
Many in NYC think that the water in the best tasting. Having lived in many places in Oregon including Portland, San Fran and Seattle, I rank it and third in my list of municipal water sources, far ahead of San Fran, ahead of Eugene and Salem, OR, but behind Portland and Seattle.
