Hi mid-forties, kids are gone. Looking for a great area to live. Will be working in White Plains. Want a hip town with shops, coffee, bars, lots of activities (parks, tennis, trails). Would also like a reasonable commute into NYC for weekend trips. Home to buy up to about $500,000. Would love any and all suggestions.
White Plains sounds like a good option for you. Lots to do in White Plains. You are also not far from the river towns and villages with a short commute to NYC.
If you want a walkable town, I would suggest Tarrytown (good restaurants, Tarrytown Music Hall, nice parks...). If you want a more community feel with less hip shops but still walkable, I would suggest Dobbs Ferry or Hastings on Hudson. $500,000 in those towns might get you a small, old 2 bed, 1 bath or a bigger-ish condo.
500k really limits your options. Would you consider an apartment? If not, as already mentioned White Plains and Tarrytown are great. Also add Port Chester and Peekskill (best for your price range but longest commute) to the list. Also, consider Stamford CT- decent downtown and commutable to White Plains and NYC.
