Hi all my family and i are looking into moving from queens to the hudson valley (dont be afraid were not the crazy hipster brooklynites or the annoying stuffy type) we're a young family with two small children. One who is starting kindergarten this year. Well we're just looking for a fresh start away from the city and the boroughs. I want my children to have space, also lower rent would be helpful or at least be able to afford a 2 bedroom apartment and a small town or village not too far away from the city (my kids are really close to all there grandparents and i feel bad taking them too far away). About us we're a quite family that would love to be outdoors more often.my husband has experience in all different fields of work. he is currently a manager of a store and Im a sahm and baker with the hopes of one day opening my own shop. I would like to know which areas are affordable, safe and has a good school district (im hoping the schools arent as bad as brooklyn and queens). Any advice would be great and highly appreciated.
Hi Indigo. Good luck in your search. The starting point for most people to recommend you some towns would be an idea of your budget and acceptable distance from NYC. Most of Westchester will be very safe with good, if not great, schools. As far as affordability, if you are not tied to NYC for your jobs than I think it makes sense to consider moving further up in the Hudson Valley or at least to the Northern parts of Westchester. This county is geared towards NYC (and some White Plains) commuters and if you are not one then it is really hard to justify paying that premium. An extra 30-40 minutes closer to Grandma's could end up costing you 100s of thousands of dollars.
Were looking for something to rent around 1200. We already pay close to that for a 1 bedroom down here. Although my husband is working down here we have more than enough to just leave and be secure for about a year with no job.i also dont mind being around 2 hrs away from queens since we have a car
Ossining or Croton. A lot of people from Brooklyn are moving up here and it makes sense for your budget. A lot of young families with children and plenty of outdoorsy things to do here and in surrounding towns. 45 minutes on Metro-North.
