My husband has accepted a job offer in Tarrytown and we are looking at places to move to. Our son plays competitive chess and we see that his enthusiasm will sustain at least for few more years if not more.
We want him to join some strong chess academy where we hope he can progress to an expert level within few years.
I see that some famous GMs grew up in White Plains. What facilities are available to children to pursue chess seriously. I saw westchester chess academy on the internet. It looks like they don't meet every week or utmost once a week.
Bergen County has International Chess Academy in Fair Lawns and Teaneck. ICA looks like they are very serious in the chess world and I see very highly ranked kids coming from their academy. They have classes multiple times a week with summer camps for the whole of summer.
I just hate the idea of moving to Bergen County just for chess and increasing my husband's commute time. I am sure Westchester County must have some strong chess scene that is not visible in google.
I live in Larchmont and we have a chess group every Saturday at 1:30 pm at the Larchmont Public Library. He can meet some teachers there, chess enthusiasts, and I know there's a teacher who attends the group. If you want I can get more info from my friend who plays chess weekly in this group. I'll email him and get back to you.
