I'm hoping someone can give me some info. My husband and I are looking for a house in Katonah, Bedford, Pound Ridge, Somers, North Salem, South Salem, etc.... I'm of the opinion we should take the best house we can get on our budget, wherever that may be. To our Brooklyn eyes these places are more similar than different. (With the exception of Yorktown Heights which we didn't really like). We want a little privacy and about an acre or more. Several friends have recently warned me to consider which towns we might fit into best as they are ALL SO DIFFERENT. Is this true? If so, can anyone describe for me the differences, or the type of people you might find in each town?? I would appreciate it, though I'm still not convinced it will matter so much. We are moving to Westchester to get away from our neighbors we want to be cordial but don't need our new townfolk to be our best friends or exactly like us. Thanks.

Others will chime in I am sure, but you should indicate whether or not you have kids/will have kids. In my view, this is a big variable with regard to this type of question because the existence of kids means the school district will have an outsized affect on your life, such that your query should be school district centric, and your question should be viewed through the prism of the type of families your kids would be attending school with.

In general terms, Somers might be the most working class of this area, although Somers is still an affluent area more or less. North Salem would probably be the most rural and would likely get you the most privacy per $$. Much of the other areas you mentioned are very pricey.

If kids are not in the picture, and you are not looking to be the social center of town, a lot of these places really will be more or less the same. Your several friends who have highlighted the differences to you are probably thinking in terms of schools.

In general Bedford and Pound Ridge are more upscale than the other towns you mention and share a school district. Katonah (actually part of Bedford) depends on where you are. Pound Ridge is the outlier in several respects, significantly more creative types. This has been discussed before, search my posts for more.

It sounds silly but I would check out Facebook pages (I like the mom pages) to get a "vibe" for a town. It's really a pretty good way to gauge if you like an area, then DEFINITELY check out each community yourself. I can tell you, Pound Ridge re-assess taxes at closing - something to consider depending on the property :-)

I will refrain from any snarky remarks(if I were to take your post literally)....If you are purely budget driven, and a house is just a house, then you will be fine in any of the towns listed. They are a far cry from Brooklyn, so you will feel like you are in the country anyway.

I would tour houses in each town with a realtor from that town, and go with your gut. Commute times, convenience of my services, and a good fit for my kids were my primary concern. YMMV

Of those towns Katonah has the most going in terms of a downtown village vibe which I would imagine might make the transition from Brooklyn easier (as well as the ease of taking the train in for trips to the city). I think Pound Ridge and the Salems are generally more rural in nature. Bedford can be snooty but it's pristine. They do have different flavors so spend a decent amount of time in each to get a feel. Again, kids and school districts might change your views as well.

Absolutely also worth checking out Ridgefield over the border in CT which borders some of these towns and does have a distinct personality too.
