I've heard that the HS in Yonkers is pretty bad, but how would I get into another district's HS? Is it very expensive? I found a townhouse in Yonkers near the Tuckahoe MetroNorth stop. How's that area? Thanks!!!!!
That is a very nice area. However, the PP is right, Yonkers schools are not the greatest though there is more than 1 highschool and some are 'better' than others. Sending your kids to an out of district school could be costly - around $15K (can be more depending on the district). The other option is parochial school which is about the same price
Parochial schools K-8 are usually under $5k. Catholic High Schools on the other hand are usually more expensive, around $10-$15k. I think Fordham Prep is still pretty affordable.
For around 500K or less, try North White Plains, Valhalla, Ossining, Tuckahoe, and Eastchester. The pickings may be slim the closer to NYC you go.
You could also try giving low offers on more expensive properties. Desperate sellers may be willing to accept a lower offer just to get rid of a property that has been on the market for a long time. A realtor told me that this has been happening more and more, but it's not something that's widely talked about for fear that it could cause a wave of falling real estate prices.
Tuition for the 2007-2008 academic year is $11,360. Books and supplies are not included. A $225 non-refundable deposit, deducted from the tuition, is payable at registration. The actual cost of a Fordham Prep education is $14,000. Fordham Preparatory School - Tuition, Scholarships and Financial Aid

Overall, Yonkers school district has the lowest rating 3 out of 10 in Westchester County on GreatSchools.net, but the quality of the schools really varies within Yonkers. If you are set on Yonkers, check out the great scholols website and see which elementary schools and middle schools least average or better within the district.
