My family is considering renting in a townhouse community in Westchester for a year before buying. We've rented SFHs and condos in the past but not a townhouse. It didn't occur to me until now, but what are some cons of renting in an HOA community? For example, I like to keep a clean car. Is it generally ok to wash your car in your driveway in a townhouse community or is that frowned upon?

Default Hoa

Frowned upon is one thing, but a violation of rules is another entirely. Many HOAs do not have rules on car washing, but some do. Its certainly something to check into before you rent. But there is no general rule to apply to HOA in NY. They are all different. some preclude lawn signs others do not. Some limit holiday decorations, others do not. Some are very active, others exist just to clean public areas and collect dues to pay insurance. You need inquire before you rent.

One of the most annoying inventions. Some of their rules range between weird to preposterous. Personally, I would stay away from any such organization.

Check out Two-Family houses instead. I know for a fact that West Harrison has a new two-family townhouse built almost every month, and I am sure other communities are the same. You can rent one without dealing with HOA garbage.

Here is an example.
