We are a family of four and get our water from Suez in New Rochelle. From what I can tell our water usage is pretty normal. Most of the year, our monthly water bill is approximately $100. During the summer, it goes to about $140 with sprinkler use. Does this sound insanely high? From what I can tell, most people on here are paying about $40 per month - granted, in various parts of the US, but could our water really be that much more expensive?

$45 per quarter in Greenburgh, going up to $60 or so in the summer. Family of three. Pretty standard usage.

What you need to check is water rates, not total bill. Look at your $140 bill and tell us how many gallons you used, what the per gallon charge is, and if there are any other charges (like paying for a capital improvement) included in the bill. Then you can compare.

We also get our water from SUEZ and pay around what you pay. It has gone up quite a bit in the past few years. Family of 4.

Yup. United Water was taken over by Suez. Our quarterly bills are now monthly and our rates shot up. We used to pay between $75-120 per quarter, now we pay that a month.

Wow! How can families with comparable usage, living in Greenburgh (which is 5 minutes away) pay less than $100 per quarter when Suez charges 3-4x that amount? How does Suez get away with that pricing?

Possible reasons include ...

Greenburgh manages it's own water system, and is accountable to it's own residents. The advisory board is responsible for setting rates to cover the cost of sourcing and distribution in addition to capital improvements. Suez is a publicly traded company that has to answer to shareholders.

Privatisation of utilities over the last 30 years has generally resulted in higher costs for the consumer.
