I am from Westchester but have lived in the Southwest for many years.

I'm considering buying a second home in NY in an interesting area, not too expensive, but with some shops and activities, outdoor beauty, etc. Westchester is too congested and expensive, so I'm looking at Putnam and Dutchess.

Cold Spring sounds nice, and people have recommended Millerton.

Does anyone have any opinions on towns east of the Hudson, that are sophisticated and interesting? Maybe a not-so-well-known town that's close to some cool stuff?

Schools don't matter-kids are grown. Could probably spend 200-300k.

Any musings are appreciated.

Personally I would look a little further up in Columbia County where you can get more acreage and still have access to amenities, like Ancram, Pine Plains, Kinderhook. For restaurants and streetlife, one can drive to Hudson.

I was thinking I would like to be near a Metro station, to travel to city and to relatives in lower Westchester.
I hadn't thought of Columbia, but thank you. I will investigate.

OK I see, of course MNR ends in Poughkeepsie. However, Columbia County is traversed by the Taconic which makes it an easy drive to/from Westchester and the Amtrak Empire Line stops by Hudson and Rhinebeck (northern Dutchess). Aside from the areas I mentioned above (I like Kinderhook due to its history and stock of pretty victorian homes), also check out Red Hook and Tivoli (both in northern Dutchess).

I forgot to add Ghent and Austerlitz.

What about Beacon? Budget would work well there and the only real mark against it is the school system.

Otherwise.. agree that northern Dutchess or southern Columbia are solid choices. I recommend keeping to the south/southeast of Hudson.

Cold Spring. Quaint town with things to do and its own Metro North stop. Worth its weight in gold.
