A building inspector came to my house and said I converted my basement to a living area instead of storage as is listed on the CO....doesn't everyone use there basement as a rec room? He also said my bathroom down there was not on the CO although it's been there since my Father bought the house ...how do I proceed. I live in Yonkers NY.

Why did a building inspector have to come to your house?

Yes I did because the basement is not an apartment just a big room with a bathroom that was here when the house was purchased 40 years ago

You let him in - well you didn't have to. But you did. So you need to deal with it now - you have to cure the violation or have a retroactive exception granted. Either way, you got to deal with the city.

I think your property taxes could go up now since you have more living area than the city thought, depending on your assessment.
