Hi everyone.

I need some help figuring out which town in Westchester is right for my family. I would love to be in a community with sidewalks and a nice town center, great public schools, and no attitude. I've heard that Bronxville, Scarsdale, and Rye to some extent can have a snobby reputation - we want a place that is laid back and relaxed, even if the people are wealthy. Is what I've heard about those towns correct? Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I think anywhere you go that has a predominantly wealthy community, you will have some pretentious people. I wouldn't be so quick to classify an entire town to be that way. My SIL lives in Scarsdale (Edgewood section) and she has a lot of parties where her neighbors are invited. I've found all her neighbors to be friendly, down to earth and laid back. Similarly I work with many people who live in the towns mentioned and they are approachable and relaxed. I've also run into quite a few not-so-nice people from those areas as well as others.
There are other towns in Westchester that have a nice center and good schools - Irvington, Hastings and Pleasantville come to mind.

Our range is anywhere up to about $1,000,000, but that is contingent upon being in an excellent school district!

Eastchester seems nice for you. The people are not snobby and the schools are award-winning great schools. You could definately find a nice house with four bedrooms for about $800,000.

With your price range I would look in Scarsdale, Edgemont (part of Scarsdale but in the Edgemont School district), Irvington, Ardsley, and Rye Brook(Blind Brook School District).-- all beautiful areas with excellent school districts. Scarsdale and Irvington have nice town centers. Ardsley, Rye Brook and Edgement do not have great town centers but great schools. You'll find pretentious people there but you'll find that in almost any Westchester town.

If you want to look up info on Westchester school districts check out this link.

Thanks for all of the help everyone!

My husband and I drove around Scarsdale and Rye Brook a bit, but I think we may have missed the town center. Does anyone know the road names for the town centers in Scarsdale, Rye Brook, Rye, Larchmont, Bronxville? We're curious to look around, but we seem to get a bit lost!

Definitely try Irvington. It is a beautiful village on the Hudson with exceptional schools. People have money, but seem to be laid back and not pretentious.

having money is not pretentious
wanting others to think you have money is pretentious.
the Hudson sounds beautiful.

Actually one can be pretentious with or without money,as it is an extravagant outward display or to be ostentatious. The originator of thread was trying to avoid purchasing home in area where there was a lot of pretentiousness.
