My girlfriend lives in Bronxville/Yonkers and I live in Park Hill, Yonkers. We both rent but looking to buy a house to start building equity. We have decided to look for a 3bedroom/2bath/1500SQ FT. at about 400K with taxes about $10K or less a year. I hope it's not a stretch to say that for 400K, it should not need major repairs...

We do not see kids in our future but have a 3 year old small dog so a small yard would be nice. I work out of my house but she works in Times Square so close to Metro North as possible and the farthers south in Westchester Country (shortest commute).

We seem to find a few decent houses in White Plains/Elmsford area but curious where else we should look? Tips/advice appeciated.

Thanks.

I can't recommend any town in Westchester with that price on homes/taxes. My only suggestion for you would be Connecticut, but I don't know your situation relative to work and your tolerance for commuting. We just recently purchased a home in Fairfield. When we initially looked in Westchester, we couldn't find anything in our $450K budget. But that was back in October. Housing prices continue to slide. However, honestly...I don't think I saw anything decent in the towns we were looking at for less then $600K. Even still...I refused to pay all that money in property taxes.

Good luck.

If you were considering staying in Yonkers, you could definitely find something. I have clients looking in the low 400's (3 bdrm) and Yonkers definitely fits the bill for taxes under 10K most other parts of westchester you are looking at 11K, 12K and more. Good luck on your search. Oh and the person who posted before me mentioned CT, if that is an option there are more affordable areas in CT.

Default hi

With that range, you should be able to find something. Especially if you will consider: starter home, are not too pick on towns/schools, will you consider condo/townhome? This is the way my husband and I broke into Westchester- we moved out to the north east part for under $300k beautiful condo. (check your PM too).

At that price point you would find a much nicer condo or townhouse that single family in Westchester.

A 2 Family at a higher price with rental income might work for you too.

All the best
