We are house hunting in South Salem and my husband will be commuting to the city. Does anyone know exactly how long the commute is if he gets the shuttle on Spring street to Katonah?
I just googled your question and a website that I'm probably not allowed to name here, had someone discussing this. PM me if you want the exact name of the website.
N.B.--this comment is dated 2 years ago:
weekday shuttle bus from Spring St. (free parking) gets you to Katonah train in roughly 20 mins, then 50 mins to NYC on the Harlem Line, a very nice line!
This is maybe splitting hairs, but the part of the city your husband works in can make a difference. It's at least an extra 15 minutes at least getting down to, say, the Financial District, versus somewhere near Grand Central.
The Lewisboro town website (Is there a shuttle service to the train station? | Lewisboro Answerbook) says it's about a 15 minute ride. It's 60-70 minutes from Katonah to Grand Central (you can look up the schedule here: http://as0.mta.info/mnr/schedules/sched_form.cfm), so the total commute would now be on the order of 75-85 minutes, and that's before he has to walk to the office or get on the subway.
Which is why I said what I said about where he works, because those extra minutes at the end of the commute could be a deal-breaker.
I know that this post is a couple of months old, but I make the commute from South Salem to NYC daily. As Symbolic mentioned, a lot of it has to due with where in NYC you work, and where in SS you live. I happen to live close to the Ridgefield border and making it much closer to the New Canaan train station. I also work across the street from Grand Central. On a perfect day, I am door to door in an hour and twenty minutes. The last thing I would want to add to my commute is a shuttle bus ride.
We began looking for property in Northern Westchester because my wife has horses. We chose South Salem due to the schools, lot sizes and its proximity to Ridgefield and New Canaan. It's a very sleepy town, so sleepy that Acorn Press stopped publishing the Lewisboro Ledger about three months ago.
Feel free to pm me it you have any specific question.
