I have got a job in White Plains NY and will be moving soon. I was looking for a good residential community around white plains and from the forums here I get a feeling of how expensive it is gonna be. I need a community where it is safe for my wife and 2 year old kid. With a salary of around 5K I am not sure if I can get a good place around White plains or Connecticut. How much would it cost to rent a decent apartment.
Please provide your valuable advice.

When you say $5K, do you mean that your salary is about $5K a month? Is that before or after taxes? Or did you mean to type something else? Sorry but I'm trying to help, I am just confused about what you mean when you say your salary is $5K.

Are you renting or do you need to sell? This can make a big difference in your timeframe.

Westchester on a whole is a very safe area. Since your child is 2 and you only want to stay for 8 months you don't have to worry too much about schools until you actually go to purchase a house. I'm assuming you have a car too since you mention CT. You can rent a 2 BR in Hartsdale or North White Plains for under $2K. Check out craigslist (just be wary of scams). Here are some I found:
modern, Upscale, Trilevel Twnhse/ Garage/ 1.5 bath (broken link)
$1700/2Bed/Safe and Convenient Location for Professionals-Nice View (broken link)
HUGE-newly renovated 2 bedroom 1&1/2 bathroom garden apt home (broken link)
Good luck.

Thanks so much for your help, I hope to find something in the range of 1500 or less. I am not sure if Connecticut is a option or it is too expensive. Thanks once again.

There are parts of Connecticut that could work, be aware I95 is really tough anywhere near Rush Hour.
Craig's list is a good place to start. If you are going to be here for 4 years or more you might want to consider a co-op purchase. Talk to the police in the area of the places you like to find out safety. You can find things for $1500 mostly one bedroom, but sometimes 2 BR.
All the best!
