Hey guys,

My wife and I just completed graduate school and have been living in Rochester, NY for the last 6 years where rent was about 600/mo.

We just accepted positions in White Plains, NY and combined, we'll be making a bit over 100k a year.

We're looking for a place to rent for now in order to save up for a house down the line.

Can anyone suggest a nice area to rent. We have been living the college/student life in noisy, college kid filled apartments and are looking for something a little nicer, quieter, for young professionals but not too far from our new jobs.

I've heard and read a lot of nice things about Tarrytown but I need to find out if they have apts or townhouses for rent there.

Also, for further down the line, can anyone suggest some areas we should check out for first time home buyers. I already mentioned our salary and our price range is probably going to be in the 300k-500k area. 600 maybe be stretching it but not out of the question.

Thanks!

Im from Rochester-the rents around here are probably going to be a nasty shock to you-more than double what you are now paying. Still White Plains, especially the downtown area is so trendy-store,boutiques, theatre, restaurats-its probably work it. Look to pay a minimum of about 1500.00 per month for a one bedroom in White Plains. If you are used to Rochester-maybe Spring valley (which is kind of like the Monroe Ave area, but not as artsy (and some people give it mixed reviews. i grew up in greece and its fine by me,lots of diversity and shopping). or Chestnut ridge is more suburban -like the town of Greece. rents there are slightly cheaper. Good luck

Tarrytown does have some rentals, yes. It's a nice area, close to the river; however, you do not have as many transportation options to White Plains. You can drive, and I think there are buses from there, but I-287 can have traffic, so I would tend to recommend staying with 119 (Tarrytown Road) to commute from there to White Plains.

Another area to check is Mount Kisco, since you are White Plains commuters. The nice thing about Mount Kisco is that you have an option of taking the train to White Plains, since it's a little bit north on the same Harlem Line of MetroNorth. It takes a little longer to go to New York, but that would not be on a daily basis for commuting, and you can get a good quality of life there for the rent that you would pay in other areas. Instead of a 1BR in White Plains, you could get a 2BR in Mount Kisco for around the same money, for example; or, you could find a less expensive 1BR and save more for your house if you wanted to do so. There's a smaller (in comparison to White Plains) downtown area in Mount Kisco that has a lot of things going for it, and you're within an easy drive of White Plains for other shopping/dining options. Plus, neighboring Bedford and Katonah have great villages that have some unique shops and restaurant offerings. And, there are a good number of apartment rental and private rental condominiums in Mount Kisco.

In terms of buying, generally speaking, you want to look at the school district since that's what sells most of Westchester, even if you do not now have children. If you want to buy a place to settle into for a few years, that would be the way to start the process. And, if you like the option of train commutes to White Plains, or the possibility in the future, you should stick to towns on the Harlem Line of MetroNorth. Most everything that's desireable in the immediate White Plains area will tend to be more expensive, since it works for commuters to White Plains and to Manhattan. And, what might appear to be a better value in the area might be that way due to the school district. And, I would look to buy the best school district possible.

Towards the higher end of your price range, you would find houses in Mount Kisco, parts of the Town of Bedford might be possible (though the house would be smaller), and a little off the train you might find something in Somers or the Town of Lewisboro. A little north, you can find something in the Goldens Bridge or Croton Falls area as well, but that would be toward the higher end of the price range. If you're not concerned about the train, you have more options, including Yorktown and Yorktown Heights. I would recommend staying on the same side of the river, however, as Rockland-White Plains can be a terrible drive in morning and evening traffic and there's no rail link between the two.
