Hello everyone,
i am new in City-Data as well to this metropolitan area.My daily commute is from home in Verona Nj all the way to work in Yonkers NY. Since i am paying everyday for the privilege to be in NYC ( $ 12 toll everytime i cross George Washington Bridge). i think i should take more advantage to the city by taking a class, go to a coffee shop, a meet up, museums , seminars, lectures , grab a beer etc. The issue is that i have to drive to work, so i have to take the car with me.
Is there any easy way to get to the city from Yonkers by train and leaving the car at work? , or is better to drive all the way down to the city, to a not very busy street ( or area that you can recommend) where i can street park and avoiding super expensive parking garages?
you can take metronorth railroad from yonkers to nyc, but the trip back to yonkers and then immediately getting in the car and driving south again might prove irritating. Parking in the city is always tough, but I've found the upper east side to be the best option for on-street spots...plus its a relatively easy exit to the gwb.
Metro-North is nice, no parking hassles, and you can read, but it's expensive ($10.50 each way peak, $7.75 off-peak from Yonkers) and only run 2-3 times an hour at night, so unless you're going somewhere walkable from Grand Central or Harlem (otherwise you'll also have to pay for a subway ride, plus this will all be time-consuming), I'd drive and try to street-park.
You can google Discount Parking NYC, find the cheapest garage in the neighborhood you're heading to, and have a coupon printed out and ready in case you can't find street parking.
