I recently moved to a one-family house with about 15 steps up to my front door. There's a mail slot in the door. This is a pretty common setup here. When USPS delivers packages, are they required to bring them to our doorstep? They often leave them down at the bottom of the steps where we can't see them, and they sit in the snow and/or rain, and could be stolen though it's a safe neighborhood. The carrier who delivers regular mail has been using the mail slot in the door.

I wouldn't necessarily think it's a regular thing. Our USPS/ UPS / FedEx drivers deliver to our door when they can. But when it's very icy or snowy, they sometimes leave packages at the bottom of the driveway or the steps. Often I'll later see them and they'll apologize for it but say they couldn't make it up. It's a hard job with all the elements and this time of year is the worst.
