I'm an out-of-towner considering taking the train from midtown Manhattan up to New Rochelle on Friday night for the Iona/Monmouth basketball game. Looks like it's about a little over a mile from the New Rochelle train station to the gym. Would this be a safe walk for a middle-aged couple on a Friday night?

Thanks bg7 for your succinct reply

One follow up question: It appears that the last train back to the city leaves New Rochelle at about 11:30. If we should miss that are there any other options? If a taxi is the only option, what is the approximate cost?

It's not the last train - you have to look at the Saturday schedule for after-midnight runs. There are two trains heading to GCT: 12:34am and 1:27am.

Shorty, that part of North avenue, 3 blocks north of train station and 3 blocks south of Ioana College is the least pretty part on New Rochelle but as bg7 had stated a middle age couple walking through on Friday night should be ok as safety goes. Nevertheless you do not need to walk, there are Bee Line busses from MetroN station to Ioana College, which you might utilize to get there faster and be warmer at this time of the year, although Friday eve should be above freezing point. Bee Line Buses are compatible with NYC Subway Metrocard so if you have unlimited it would not cost you anything. You can even look up the schedule, it's fairly accurate. transportation.westchestergov.com/bee-line

Thanks ANM and Meaning for the very helpful information. Are there any good places to eat in that neighborhood or would we be better off eating in the city before we head out?

At this time of the year, eliminating, Mediterranean Terrace of Dubrovnik and likes, I can recommend Modern restaurant on Hugenot if you like Italian food. It is 2 streets of MetroN stop. Something like that in Manhattan would cost significantly more. If you like Indian food there is a descent Indian on Division St. around the Corner, although with Americanized mild tastes. There are some good Mexican I have tried

It's a little sketchy from the train station until about Lincon Ave, and then it's pretty safe. I drive by that area almost daily. Downtown New Rochelle is, in my opinion, not a very nice place. The Projects surround the downtown area and there are a good amount of muggings. You should be fine, just be aware of your surroundings until you get to Lincoln Ave. North Ave is a busy road so that should keep much of the trouble to the secondary streets. The area when you pass the courthouse all the way to Iona is safe.
