I have Verizon and have had it for ages, and had always believed it was supposed to have the best network. But, I commute every day on the New Haven line from Larchmont and find Verizon to have terrible reception through parts of my commute around Pelham, Bronx and definitely in the Grand Central tunnels. Also Verizon has terrible coverage/dead spots around many parts of Larchmont/New Rochelle/Mamaroneck where I am regularly (including at our house and our surrounding neighborhood).

My husband has been pushing us to switch to T-Mobile as a family (he has AT&T and it is spotty many places too, although often better on the train), but I am worried about coverage and I don't know anyone who has it. Can anyone offer their experiences with T-Mobile around these parts? Thanks!

You wouldn't expect much reception in the tunnels from any carrier - they are dead zones unless some commercial carrier puts a transmitter in there - which they haven't yet.

As for the rest of the route - I have ATT and its not better, there is a whole chunk between around Mott Haven to about Pelham where the signal is awful - or nothing at all. Hopefully someone can chime in on how good T-Mobile is.

My wife uses a T-mobile hot spot on the train and finds it works well the majority of the ride.

Thanks for this.

I would say that I have reason to think some carriers have better coverage in the tunnels. AT&T is definitely better in parts of the tunnels than is Verizon (my husband has AT&T and will be chugging along on his phone when I have literally no service or 1x in parts). And, once I was stuck for an extended period of time in the tunnel due to a disabled train and one woman went from car to car trying to find someone with a working phone because she had childcare issues and needed to let someone know she was stuck and one car down she finally found someone who had a signal. I just assumed it was T-Mobile or Sprint because all the AT&T and Verizon people around us had zip coverage.
