After living in Yonkers and then going to San Francisco, I never thought I would be comparing both these cities. And the main commonality both these cities have that I've noticed are how steep the hills can be! In fact I hear Yonkers is the second most hilly city (or however you define a city with lots of hills) after San Francisco! I believe it but if I am wrong on this, please correct me. I just thought I'd mention it because I was walking some parts of Yonkers and the inclines were CRAZY. I knew Yonkers had a lot of hills but until I finally really took a walk from downtown Yonkers going east towards Bronxville, I was quite impressed how Yonkers compares to San Francisco.

That's pretty much all the similarities I can make between the two because other than the hills they are drastically different cities in every facet I can think of. Still, the hills of Yonkers definitely gives San Francisco and its outter areas (like Daly City) some good run for its money and if I lived in Yonkers I would be running those steep hills everyday! My cardio would be through the roof!

I laughed out loud at this punchline

But seriously, I think the hills, which combined with the existing land use and transit patterns make it close to impossible for Manhattan commuters to live a pedestrian lifestyle, are one of the factors that will keep Yonkers the way it is for the foreseeable future. Developers and the NYT have been hyping up Yonkers as the next gentrification frontier, but I just can't see it happening.

Yonkers's income tax is more of an impediment to revitalization than it's hills.

Oh yeah, those hills are definitely a deterrent but I just can't see much of Yonkers being gentrified. Especially areas outside of downtown Yonkers. I can see downtown Yonkers getting a tad bit gentrified but it just doesn't have enough to really make it an area to appeal to artist or young professionals. Granted, when there's a will there's a way. Areas like Bryn Mawr and what have you, NO WAY. I don't see the more suburban side of Yonkers ever getting gentrified.
