What's going on? I'm back to get some more feedback/opinion from you guys. So I've been targeting the NYC and DC metro areas to plant roots in. Had a job offer a couple months back in NYC that wasn't what I hoped it would be...so I turned it down, for a bunch of reasons.

I'm a 37 yr old, single black man, born and raised on Long Island, and living outside of Philadelphia for 13 years. I've been done with the Philly area for a while, but I won't move until I have a new job lined up first. Where I land a job will obviously determine which area I look into more...but I'll cross that bridge when I get to it.

I'm at a point in my life now where I don't mind not living in the city - as long as I'm in a not-so-sleepy suburb with good access to NYC, that's enough for me. I'll post this question in other forms, but wanted to see about Rockland & Westchester County. I know there are some obvious towns I should be looking at, but here's a group of towns that I had my eye on as potential relocation spots:

Westchester County: Yonkers, White Plains, New Rochelle, Pelham, Mamaroneck, Rye Brook (not Rye), Port Chester, Tarrytown, Dobbs Ferry, Bronxville, Tuckahoe, Ardsley, Hartsdale, Elmsford, and Fairview

Rockland County: The Nyacks (any of them), Nanuet, Suffern, and Spring Valley

Are there any that towns that I should scratch off this list? Any that I forgot? Hit me up and let me know what you think. Thanks.

As crazy as this may sound, you could consider Fleetwood/northern Mount Vernon(inc. Oakwood Heights)/perhaps eastern MV(inc. Vernon Heights) as well, depending on your situation/what you are looking for. Mount Vernon's just a quick commute to Manhattan by Metro-North

Regarding Rockland, Nyack would be best for you I think. Access to Manhattan by car is easy and quick from southern Rockland outside of commuting hours, but Nyack lacks train access unless you use the station in Tarrytown and uber across the bridge (I am think of situations where you go to the city and drink and don't want to drive). Westchester will give you better train access but will be more expensive. Also, most of the communities you mentioned in Westchester don't have their own social singles scenes. Nyack has an advantage in that you can walk to everything. White Plains can give you this as well, and maybe New Rochelle.

However, you may do well in NJ also. Hoboken is great but that is more or less the same thing as living in the City. Montclair you may like, and some of the nicer areas near Newark as well.

^ Speaking of NJ, the South Orange/Maplewood area may work as well. https://mobile.nytimes.com/2011/09/1...ww.google.com/

Also, if you don’t mind going a little further north, a place like Beacon may be a sleeper. I say that due to being a diverse small city that is walkable and has a growing art scene. It also has train access into NYC as well. Beacon, NY - USA.com™

Heard a lot of good things about Nyack...and Nanuet, but more so Nyack.

White Plains would definitely be in the running also. Fairfield County being considered, although over there, it's pretty much either Stamford or Norwalk. That's why I didn't post in the CT thread.

Are you looking to buy a house or apartment, or rent? First suggestions would be White Plains or Stamford (CT), maybe Port Chester too. Some of those other towns you would be paying a huge premium for school district.

Definitely renting. If I look north of the city, my concentration will be on Westchester and Fairfield Counties. I'd still take a look at Rockland, but not as much. White Plains and Stamford are two of the top target areas for me.

As I mentioned, in Fairfield, it's pretty much either Stamford or Norwalk. In Westchester, the leader is White Plains, but Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, Mamaroneck, Port Chester, Tarrytown, and Dobbs Ferry (among others) will get some looks.

Beacon is not accessible to Manhattan, at least for a person who is looking at Westchester and Rockland. Its too far away. Yes, it has train access to NYC, but so does Montreal.
