Croton-On-Hudson: Nearest small/quaint downtown area (Rye, Mamaroneck: buying a home, buying, camping)

My wife and I are in the process of buying a home in Croton, moving from Brooklyn. We're not too familiar with the area, so we were hoping someone could chime in with recommendations on a nearby walk-able downtown area within a 20 minute drive. Basically someplace to drive, grab lunch, spend an afternoon with shops, etc.
We stopped by the coffee place in Croton, but it did not seem like there was too much else beyond that. Since I grew up in lower westchester, I'm thinking along the lines of Rye/Mamaroneck/Larchmont/Greenwich "downtowns".
I'm sure we'll do more exploring once we move, but my wife is looking for ideas for places to explore nearby our new home, and we'd appreciate any thoughts.
Cold Spring, NY about 25 minutes north of Croton on RT 9N, lots of tourists during fall leaf season, beautiful spot right on Hudson River with benches to enjoy the breathtaking views, good restaurants, antique shops, bed and breakfast, etc. You will pass the haunted Bird and Bottle Inn along the way and Boscobel House,a 19th century estate is on RT. 9 in Garrison also. Other places of interest are Woodbury Commons, Harriman State Park has camping/swimming,
Brotherhood Winery, Bear Mountain, Sugar Loaf Mountain, Highland Falls and West Point, Bridge Over the Hudson..not sure which counties these spots are located. You can go farther north to Rhinebeck (has nice fairs), Hyde Park (Roosevelt home)
Downtown Peekskill. What's more impressive is that went from a total crap hole to a vibrancy in a relatively short period of time. And from there move north to Cold Spring (always been charming) and Beacon, which has a similar history as Peekskill.
Also head south to Tarrytown and Pleasantville. Chappaqua is cute, but there really isn't much there. Mount Kisco is the "hub" of northern Westchester.

You're Welcome! If you venture out to Mt. Kisco, about 20 minutes further up the Saw Mill River Pkwy and Rt 84 is Danbury, CT. It's not the quaint town Larchmont type of place, but it has the big box stores, Danbury Fair indoor mall, three thrift shops, most of the chain restaurants and a restaurant called "Down The Hatch" which offers outdoor dining on Candlewood Lake, a hidden gem. Just avoid going to Danbury during afternoon rush hour, the traffic is horrific, backed up from Mt.Kisco to Danbury!
