From The Daily Voice -

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- Six high schools in Westchester County were ranked among the best in the nation according to Newsweek's list of top 500 high schools this year.

Schools are ranked using everything from achievement information, like standardized test results and SAT and ACT scores to students' college readiness.

I'm sorry -- this isn't meant to put YOU down, it's Newsweek. These rankings are absolutely meaningless and are devised only to sell magazines. Believe me, I worked for a magazine.

They are talking about the graduation rate at these high schools. All it means is that these schools are in affluent communities where everyone graduates from high school. It doesn't mean that they have better programs or better teachers. Newsweek, like Time Magazine, is getting very very desperate.

This one is better, and it shows how well many Westchester schools stack up nationwide.

The original post is strictly FYI.

Westchester attracts an educated and affluent populace who appreciate a variety of resources when making decisions.

I don't see how this is a "resource". It just means that certain communities are uniformly affluent. They can't possibly be evaluating each school.

Just curious, nobody seems concerned about these rankings? US News uses variety of indicators including standardized test results, AP enrollment etc.

I find it very worrisome that despite overpriced houses and high taxes we do not stack up favorably in national rankings.

I don't think anyone takes US News rankings for high school seriously - I remember how high Yonkers' schools used to come out due to IB weighting...

You should look at Niche if you want a more credible ranking. (I don't know how Westchester schools do on Niche though).

Who cares about the ratings? Look at how the schools/communities do at getting their kids in the college of their choice. At the end of the day that's what you're paying for, not bragging rights in some magazine.

This is not the point -- rankings show how low we stack in core school achievement metrics vs the rest of the nation.
Making a parallel here -- if someone is saying they're a top student of their class, their GPA cannot be 2.5.
