"The proposal to build a multi-billion dollar tunnel under the Long Island Sound, connecting Long Island and Westchester, has been scrapped, New York State Department of Transportation officials announced on Thursday.

NYSDOT Commissioner Paul Karas made the announcement on Thursday, putting the kibosh on the plan, which may have cost upwards of $55 billion, according to a recently released study that was commissioned earlier this year. The exact reasoning for abandoning the plan was not provided. "

Plan To Build Long Island Sound Tunnel Scrapped | Rye Daily Voice

This was inevitable. Rye is the 30th wealthiest town in America with a median income around $172,000 a year. They are also one of the bluest towns in the bluest county of the blue state of NY. There is no way NY politicians were going to antagonize Rye residents and risk those political donations.

Plus there was no way Port Jefferson or any other area on LI was going to become like Stamford. They should just focus instead on upgrading ferry service.

Phew.

I guess Cuomo didn't need that bad feeling towards him that was building up from this plan. Right before before the primaries too.

We'll see. Whether to build or not to build has been on and off since I was a kid in the 60's. Powerful interests are for and against the idea. And if Elon Musk and The Boring Company sucessfully complete his hyperloop in LA there might be renewed interest.
