I currently have the cable/internet/phone package with Verizon for $137 a month after taxes, but my contract is coming to an end next month. I received a notice that my bill will increase by $20 per month since my 2-year promotion is coming to an end. I'm thinking of switching to Optimum and just getting the internet service for approximately $53 after taxes.

What is your experience with Verizon and/or Optimum? I'm so fed up with these providers but hoping some crowd sourcing here will give me a clearer idea of which company is better in Westchester.

We started out with Optimum in our apartment in NJ, and after moving to Westchester, we qualified for a promo rate for bundled internet/phone/cable around $75/month. After 2 years here, the promo expired and our bill increased by $100/mo. Since Optimum wasn't willing to extend any additional discounts, we cancelled it earlier this year and switched to a Verizon internet-only plan (again at a 2 year introductory rate) for under $100. For TV service we stopped buying cable and are currently using the Direct TV Now streaming service along with a Netflix subscription. They also threw in a free Apple TV with a 3 month pre-pay, which wasn't bad.

In terms of internet service and connectivity I prefer Verizon so far. We've had fewer outages, and faster 'real life' speeds. Everyone's experience may differ, but overall, I'm happy with the internet-only approach and certainly don't miss paying the premium for cable! I do, however, miss the phone; our cell connectivity is awful and can be a huge hassle when trying to work from home.

Also, if you aren't happy after switching and can tough it out for a few months, your original provider may let you re-apply for the 'new customer' rate after a certain period of time away. In our case Optimum required a 2-3 month waiting period, but just something to be aware of in case you get buyer's remorse and want to switch back.

From bitter experience I can tell you Cablevision doesn't just have bad customer service...they have no customer service. And they don't care. Document every interaction with them so you can contact Consumer Rights Regarding Cable Television Service

BTW, I got this address from someone unhappy with their FIOS service.

I had Optimum in Brooklyn and they were fine. When we moved to WC, FIOS was already setup in the house so we went with that. I have had quite a few interactions with Verizon support and honestly, they've been fine.

Up until March we had a triple-play package of phone, cable & internet. I think the bill was close to $170 a month. We had an opportunity to modify our service so we started looking at options. Switching to another provider was possible but we were doing some renovations in the house and I was interested in cutting the cord completely and going wireless to get rid of all the annoying cables. Optimum have the Altice service that provides a lot of what we needed but, as stated, I was looking to get away from a package service. In the end we decided to stay with Verizon but only get the internet service from them - 10GB speed for $40 a month. For regular tv service we went with Youtube TV, which comes with unlimited cloud DVR and all of the most common cable channels including local channels. Sling TV have a similar offering. We are delighted with Youtube TV - for $35 a month we get all the tv channels we regularly watch with one or two exceptions (HGTV is not included yet). We have had Netflix and Amazon for a while now, so those costs were not factored into the equation. If you don't have a SMART TV that supports apps, a $25 (one time charge) Roku stick provides the functionality you need.

So instead of paying $175 a month we had a $50 one time charge for two Roku sticks, $40 monthly for internet service and $35 monthly for Youtube TV.
